DeCARbonize the Oceans
Our current car-centric transportation system has a huge impact on ocean health, and increased levels of greenhouse gases are warming the oceans, creating stronger storms, accelerating sea level rise, and collapsing ecosystems. For example, each gallon gas burned puts 5 lbs of CO2 in the ocean, turning the water more acidic. Also, runoff from rains and storms dump tire dust and other roadway pollution into waterways.
We need to change our transportation system to promote health and well-being across the region and need to advance safe, cost effective, and convenient transportation for getting into and around New Haven.
A youth led project on partner organization New Haven Climate Movement, DeCARbonize has created new goNewHavengo resources for Youth and Parents, and on Car Impacts on Oceans and Ocean Impacts on New Haven.

Five Ways Transportation Pollution Impacts Connecticut and the Oceans
40% of climate pollution comes from transportation which has a number of important impacts.
Warming Oceans - reduces oxygen in the water and negatively impacts ocean plants and sea life.
Ocean Acidification - Oceans are absorbing CO2 making oceans more acidic killing shellfish and coral.
Sea Level Rise - CT will see at least two feet rise by 2050 from melting ice and water heating expansion.
Extreme Weather: Warmer water will make storms stronger and create more flooding.
Ocean currents are shifting causing changes to weather patterns and food webs.
